I woke up\u2014his side of the bed was cold. I stepped outside and froze when I saw him.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t walking toward the curb where the garbage truck passes. Instead, he was standing at the very edge of our driveway, near the old storm drain that leads into the city sewers.<\/p>\n

The streetlights were flickering, casting long, dancing shadows, but I could see him clearly. He wasn\u2019t just holding the trash bag; he was shaking it, as if trying to get the attention of something.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere,\u201d I heard him whisper, his voice trembling in the silence. \u201cTake it. It\u2019s fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched in horror as he leaned over the iron grate. He didn\u2019t drop the bag. He held it out.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, a long, pale arm shot out from the darkness of the drain. It was impossibly thin, wet, and gray, with too many joints. It snatched the white bag from his hands with a wet slap that echoed in the quiet street.<\/p>\n

My husband scrambled backward, hyperventilating, wiping his hands on his pajama pants as if they were dirty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it,\u201d he stammered to the drain. \u201cThat\u2019s all for tonight. Go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the depths of the sewer, a sound drifted up\u2014a low, raspy voice that sounded like grinding stones. \u201cStill\u2026 hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband put his head in his hands and began to sob. \u201cI don\u2019t have anything else! I\u2019ve given you the scraps, the leftovers\u2026 please, just let us sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe meat\u2026 is in the doorway,\u201d the voice hissed.<\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s head snapped up. He spun around and saw me standing on the porch. The look on his face wasn\u2019t guilt. It was sheer terror.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah, run!\u201d he screamed, lunging toward me.<\/p>\n

But he wasn\u2019t fast enough. The heavy iron grate exploded upward, landing on the pavement with a deafening crash. Something tall, gray, and unfolding like a spider began to pull itself out of the hole.<\/p>\n
