Why is &#8216;family time&#8217; only respected if you have children? \ud83d\udc47"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dynenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/unnamed-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><b data-path-to-node=\"1\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Last year, I worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day because &#8220;no one with kids could.&#8221;<\/b> I don\u2019t have kids, so apparently that makes me the designated holiday mule. I didn\u2019t complain \u2014 I covered the shift, missed my family dinner, and came home to cold leftovers and an empty apartment.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><b data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">This year, the schedule came out and\u2014surprise\u2014I was assigned Christmas Eve again.<\/b> No discussion. No rotation. Just my name slapped on the holiday like it belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">I told my boss, politely, <b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"26\">&#8220;I can\u2019t do Christmas Eve again. I already covered last year. Someone else needs to take a turn.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">He stared at me like I\u2019d personally ruined the holiday season. He said, &#8220;Well&#8230; employees with families need that time. Maybe this job isn\u2019t for you if you\u2019re not willing to be flexible.&#8221; Flexible = sacrifice your life, so others don\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">I asked him why child-free employees are expected to give up every holiday. He said, <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"85\">&#8220;Because they have real responsibilities. You just have free time.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">That was the breaking point. The implication that my family, my time, and my life mattered less simply because I didn&#8217;t have children was insulting.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">I looked him dead in the eye and said, <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"39\">&#8220;If my time is so free, then I\u2019m free to find a job that respects it. Consider this my resignation, effective immediately. Good luck finding someone &#8216;flexible&#8217; enough to cover Christmas Eve AND my empty position.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">I walked out right then. I spent Christmas Eve with my parents, phone turned off, eating a hot meal.
