I had retired early after years as a school secretary and helping care for my late husband through cancer. But apparently, to Vanessa, retirement meant being free labor.<\/p>\n

For six months, my life became that wedding.<\/p>\n

I toured venues, argued with caterers, fixed seating disasters, calmed down florists, mailed invitations, and answered Vanessa\u2019s calls at midnight because the napkin colors looked \u201ccheap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not once did she offer to pay me.<\/p>\n

Daniel noticed how exhausted I was sometimes, but every time he asked if I was okay, I forced a smile.<\/p>\n

Then came the reception speeches.<\/p>\n

Vanessa stood with a champagne glass in her hand, glowing beneath the lights.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to thank the people who made this day possible,\u201d she announced.<\/p>\n

I sat up straighter.<\/p>\n

She thanked her maid of honor. The photographer. Her college roommate. The DJ. Twelve people in total.<\/p>\n

I looked toward Daniel, waiting for him to say something. Anything.<\/p>\n

But he stayed silent.<\/p>\n

That hurt more than Vanessa\u2019s cruelty ever could.<\/p>\n

I quietly left before dessert was served.<\/p>\n

The next morning, my phone rang.<\/p>\n

Daniel.<\/p>\n

His voice sounded strange. Tight. Angry.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d he said, \u201cif you ever let someone disrespect you like that again\u2014even if it\u2019s me\u2014you walk away. Do you understand?\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard Vanessa talking to her bridesmaids after you left,\u201d he said bitterly. \u201cShe said you were useful because \u2018older women are desperate to feel needed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I realized something horrible,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI let her treat you that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was silence on the line before he spoke again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI filed for an annulment this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly dropped the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love her,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut I can\u2019t marry someone who humiliates my mother after everything you did for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should\u2019ve defended you yesterday,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m sorry I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time in months, I cried.<\/p>\n

Not because my son\u2019s wedding had fallen apart.<\/p>\n
