It’s a generously sized room with a lovely bay window, a space she truly cherishes. Knowing she plans to attend the local university, I’ve always reassured her that she’s welcome to live at home indefinitely, and that eventually, this house will be hers. I purchased this house with her mother, and after her mother’s passing ten years ago, I paid off the mortgage primarily with her life insurance, so it feels only right that Stephanie inherit it. Recently, I became engaged to Ella, my girlfriend of three years. With Ella’s landlord significantly increasing her rent, we decided that she and her children would move in with me. Ella has two daughters, aged thirteen and ten, and two sons, aged eleven and nine. Stephanie, being incredibly thoughtful, offered to give up a room she uses as a studio and project space for the girls. She uses the space for her art and voice-over work. The boys were given my son’s old room; he’s married and living elsewhere now. Last night was the big move-in day. We planned to unpack and settle in properly in the morning. I even took the second half of the day off work to help everyone get organized and comfortable, and I picked up a cake to celebrate our new blended family. I wanted everyone to feel welcome and excited about this new chapter in our lives. Little did I know what awaited me.
…………………………………………..
…………………………………………..

As I approached the front door, my hands trembled with excitement. I imagined the kids unpacking their belongings, Ella organizing the kitchen, and Stephanie happily helping them settle in. I envisioned a warm, harmonious atmosphere filled with laughter and camaraderie. With a smile on my face, I inserted the key into the lock, eager to witness the joyous scene within. However, what I found on the other side of that door was anything but joyful. It was a scene that would forever be etched into my memory, a moment that shattered my illusions and left me reeling in disbelief.

But when I opened the door… I froze. The cake literally slipped from my hands and landed on the floor with a muffled thud, splattering frosting across the entryway. My jaw dropped, and my eyes widened in disbelief at the scene unfolding before me. It was something I could have NEVER anticipated. It was my daughter…

I saw my daughter, Stephanie, in her ensuite bathroom. It wasn’t what she was *doing* that shocked me, but *who* she was doing it with. I had expected chaos from moving everyone in, perhaps some bickering between the kids or some organizing dilemmas. But NOTHING could have prepared me for this. In the bathroom was Ella’s eldest daughter, my soon-to-be stepdaughter. They were… **brushing their teeth together.**

I know, I know. It sounds ridiculous when I type it out. But hear me out! Stephanie has ALWAYS had an immaculate bathroom. You could eat off the floors, that’s how clean it is. And here was Ella’s DAUGHTER. Using Stephanie’s TOOTHBRUSH. IN Stephanie’s SINK. The absolute *gall* of these two. I didn’t know what to do.

I ran to my room, grabbed my laptop, and started writing this. Ella came in a few minutes later, asking what was wrong. I told her EVERYTHING and [“SHE STARTED LAUGHING”]. She said they were just trying to bond. I told her that didn’t give her daughter the right to use my daughter’s toothbrush. She called me crazy and said I was overreacting. Am I the crazy one? What should I do?

My daughter, Stephanie, is fortunate enough to have one of the two ensuite bathrooms in our house.
