Inside the room was an elderly woman lying in a bed. She looked weak and fragile, with tubes connected to machines beside her.<\/p>\n Sam was holding her hand.<\/p>\n I froze.<\/p>\n He was talking softly to her, telling her about his week, about work, about how much he missed her cooking. His voice sounded different\u2014gentler than I had ever heard before.<\/p>\n Then he reached into the bag he brought and pulled out something small.<\/p>\n A necklace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The same one from the jewelry store receipt.<\/p>\n He carefully placed it around the woman\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n \u201cHappy birthday, Mom,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n My chest tightened.<\/p>\n The nurse standing next to me whispered, \u201cHe comes here every week. His mother has been very sick for months.\u201d<\/p>\n Suddenly everything made sense.<\/p>\n He hadn\u2019t told anyone because his mom didn\u2019t want people to worry. She had asked him to keep it private.<\/p>\n And the new clothes?
