I pushed the door open just a little wider.<\/p>\n

Jason was hunched over the desk, shoulders rounded, staring at his laptop like it might disappear if he blinked. The screen reflected in his glasses. His hands were shaking.<\/p>\n

He jumped when the floor creaked beneath my foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus\u2014\u201d He slammed the laptop shut. \u201cYou scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a second, neither of us spoke. The room smelled faintly of coffee and stale air. Clothes were folded neatly in piles. A toothbrush sat in a cup by the desk. He really had been living in here.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d I asked quietly.<\/p>\n

He ran a hand through his hair and let out a long breath. \u201cI didn\u2019t want you to find out like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart started pounding. \u201cFind out what?\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled the laptop back toward him, hesitated, then opened it again and turned the screen so I could see.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t another woman.
It wasn\u2019t porn.
It wasn\u2019t anything dramatic.<\/p>\n

It was spreadsheets. Medical portals. Insurance forms. Emails titled\u00a0Sleep Study Results<\/em>,\u00a0Neurology Follow-Up<\/em>,\u00a0Next Steps<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been lying awake for months,\u201d he said. \u201cNot because of your snoring. Because I can\u2019t sleep. At all.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at the screen. \u201cThen why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I was scared,\u201d he said, his voice cracking. \u201cAnd because every time you finally fell asleep, I stayed awake listening to you breathe and thinking\u2026 what if I can\u2019t do this forever?\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained it all then.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d been having panic attacks at night. Chest tightness. Racing thoughts. Fear he couldn\u2019t explain. The guest room wasn\u2019t about comfort \u2014 it was about control. About having a place where he could pace, work, distract himself, not feel like he was failing next to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou let me blame myself,\u201d I said. \u201cI tried everything. I was embarrassed. I felt rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he whispered. \u201cAnd I hate myself for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

We sat on the edge of the bed, the silence thick between us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy lock the door?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He swallowed. \u201cBecause some nights I cried. And I didn\u2019t want you to see me like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a long moment, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n

Then I reached for his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to shut me out,\u201d I said. \u201cBut you also don\u2019t have to do this alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next week, we made changes.<\/p>\n

He started therapy. I went with him to one appointment, then stepped back when he needed space. Some nights he still slept in the guest room \u2014 but the door stayed open. The lies stopped.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t magically fix everything.<\/p>\n

But we stopped pretending.<\/p>\n

And sometimes, late at night, when I wake up and hear him pacing down the hall, he\u2019ll come sit beside me, exhausted but honest.<\/p>\n
