That day, my husband was supposed to be at work for at least another three hours.
I knew that for a fact\u2014we\u2019d talked about it over breakfast. I was home alone, cleaning, moving through the house on autopilot, when there was a knock at the door.<\/p>\n

I opened it and saw him standing there.<\/p>\n

Or at least, I thought it was him.<\/p>\n

He smiled, but it didn\u2019t quite reach his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you home so early?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t feeling well,\u201d he said easily. \u201cMy boss let me leave early.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could say anything else, he stepped past me and walked straight toward our bedroom. No hug. No kiss. No familiar comment about the mess or the music playing. Just straight down the hallway.<\/p>\n

Something tightened in my chest.<\/p>\n

I followed him.<\/p>\n

He moved differently\u2014too stiff, too deliberate. In the bedroom, he stopped in front of the closet and just stood there, like he was waiting for something.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you okay?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He turned to me slowly. That\u2019s when I noticed the details that didn\u2019t fit. His shoes\u2014ones I\u2019d never seen before. His jacket\u2014wrong brand, wrong color. Even his cologne was off. Close\u2026 but not right.<\/p>\n

Then he said my name.<\/p>\n

And he said it wrong.<\/p>\n

Just one syllable off. Tiny. Almost unnoticeable.<\/p>\n

Except my husband had never once said it that way.<\/p>\n

My heart started pounding. I took a step back and asked, quietly, \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

His face changed instantly. The friendly expression dropped like a mask.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I should go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I ran.<\/p>\n

I locked myself in the bathroom and called my husband\u2014my real husband\u2014my hands shaking so badly I almost dropped the phone.<\/p>\n

He answered from work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still at the office,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when I heard the front door open and close.<\/p>\n

The police later told me the man had been watching our house for weeks. He knew my husband\u2019s schedule. He\u2019d studied his clothes, his walk, even the way he spoke. He planned to wait in the bedroom until I relaxed\u2014until I stopped paying attention.<\/p>\n

I still don\u2019t know what would have happened if I hadn\u2019t followed him.<\/p>\n

Now, every knock at the door makes my stomach drop.
And sometimes, when my husband comes home early, I look at him just a second longer\u2014checking every detail\u2014before I let myself breathe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
