Before I could get myself together and say something, my mother-in-law suddenly said, \u201cSon, you should be careful with jokes like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The table went quiet.<\/p>\n
My husband laughed again, like it was nothing. \u201cMom, relax. I\u2019m just kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n
But she didn\u2019t laugh. She looked straight at him and said, \u201cNo, you\u2019re not. That\u2019s not funny, and you know it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Everyone at the table stopped eating. I could feel my face burning, and I still couldn\u2019t believe what he had just said about me.<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201cI remember when you two found out about the pregnancy. She was terrified. She cried for days because she thought the implant failed and she didn\u2019t know what to do. You were the one who said you\u2019d figure it out together.\u201d<\/p>\n
My husband shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now,\u201d she said calmly, \u201cyou\u2019re sitting here acting like she tricked you? That\u2019s not fair to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
No one said a word. Even his dad looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
My husband tried to brush it off again. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the damage was already done. Everyone had heard it. Everyone knew.<\/p>\n
For the rest of the dinner, the mood was awkward and quiet. I barely spoke, and he avoided looking at me.<\/p>\n
On the drive home, he finally said, \u201cYou\u2019re not still upset about that, are you? It was just a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked out the window for a moment before answering.<\/p>\n
\u201cA joke is supposed to be funny,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cBut you just told your whole family you think I trapped you with our child.\u201d<\/p>\n
