I glanced at the chaos around me\u2014bags everywhere, my living room rearranged, the smell of someone else cooking in my kitchen.<\/p>\n
Caleb walked in from the hallway looking nervous.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey\u2026 babe,\u201d he said slowly. \u201cI was going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were?\u201d I asked calmly.<\/p>\n
His mom waved a hand. \u201cIt\u2019s only temporary. Our lease ended, and this house has plenty of space.\u201d<\/p>\n
His brother added, \u201cAnd don\u2019t worry, we won\u2019t get in your way.\u201d<\/p>\n
I forced a smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course,\u201d I said. \u201cNo problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
They relaxed instantly. Laughter filled the room again like nothing was wrong.<\/p>\n
But inside, a plan was already forming.<\/p>\n
That night, after everyone went to sleep on air mattresses and the guest bed, I quietly opened my laptop.<\/p>\n
The house wasn\u2019t technically ours.<\/p>\n
It was mine.<\/p>\n
My name was the only one on the deed. I had bought it before Caleb and I got married.<\/p>\n
The next morning, while everyone was still eating breakfast, I walked into the kitchen holding a folder.<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n
His mother blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled politely.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince we suddenly have so many people living here, I figured it was the perfect time to sell. I\u2019ve actually been thinking about moving somewhere smaller anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb stared at me like I had just spoken another language.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re selling the house?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cAnd the realtor said once it\u2019s listed, we\u2019ll need the house empty for showings.\u201d<\/p>\n
His brother sat up. \u201cWait\u2026 you mean we have to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n
I shrugged.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell\u2026 you said you wouldn\u2019t pay rent. And unfortunately, the buyers probably won\u2019t want roommates.\u201d<\/p>\n
His mother\u2019s smile vanished.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are we supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n
I picked up my coffee.<\/p>\n
