My heart started pounding so loudly I could hear it over the sound of my engine.<\/p>\n
Sam pulled into the parking lot of a small house on the edge of town. It definitely wasn\u2019t his parents\u2019 place. I parked across the street, trying to stay hidden behind a large tree.<\/p>\n
My hands were shaking.<\/p>\n
This is it<\/em>, I thought.\u00a0I\u2019m about to catch him.<\/em><\/p>\n Sam stepped out of the car holding a small gift bag\u2014the kind jewelry stores use. My stomach twisted.<\/p>\n The front door opened before he even knocked.<\/p>\n But it wasn\u2019t a woman who greeted him.<\/p>\n It was a\u00a0little girl<\/strong>.<\/p>\n She couldn\u2019t have been more than six years old. She ran straight into his arms, laughing, and he picked her up like he\u2019d done it a thousand times before.<\/p>\n I froze.<\/p>\n Then an older woman\u2014maybe in her late 60s\u2014stepped outside and smiled at him warmly.<\/p>\n Sam walked inside with them like he belonged there.<\/p>\n My chest felt tight. My mind was racing with a thousand terrible possibilities.<\/p>\n Was this his secret family?<\/p>\n I couldn\u2019t sit there anymore. I got out of the car and walked up to the door before I could talk myself out of it.<\/p>\n I knocked.<\/p>\n A moment later, the door opened\u2026 and Sam\u2019s face went completely pale.<\/p>\n \u201cLisa? What are you doing here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n \u201cI think I should be asking you that,\u201d I said, my voice shaking.<\/p>\n The little girl peeked out from behind him.<\/p>\n \u201cSam, who is she?\u201d she asked softly.<\/p>\n Sam looked like he was about to collapse.<\/p>\n Then the older woman stepped forward.<\/p>\n \u201cOh,\u201d she said gently. \u201cYou must be his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n My heart dropped.<\/p>\n Sam rubbed his face and sighed.<\/p>\n \u201cLisa\u2026 I was going to tell you. I just didn\u2019t know how.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTell me what?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n He looked at the little girl.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is Emma,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cShe\u2019s my niece.\u201d<\/p>\n I blinked.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy sister passed away three years ago,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe had no one else. Mom and Dad are too old to take care of a young child full time\u2026 so I\u2019ve been helping raise her.\u201d<\/p>\n I stared at him, completely stunned.<\/p>\n \u201cThe clothes\u2026 the jewelry receipt\u2026\u201d I said.<\/p>\n Sam gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n \u201cThe clothes were because Emma kept saying I dressed like an old man,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the jewelry?
