My heart started pounding so loudly I could hear it over the sound of my engine.<\/p>\n

Sam pulled into the parking lot of a small house on the edge of town. It definitely wasn\u2019t his parents\u2019 place. I parked across the street, trying to stay hidden behind a large tree.<\/p>\n

Sam looked like he was about to collapse.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sister passed away three years ago,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe had no one else. Mom and Dad are too old to take care of a young child full time\u2026 so I\u2019ve been helping raise her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him, completely stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe clothes\u2026 the jewelry receipt\u2026\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Sam gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe clothes were because Emma kept saying I dressed like an old man,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the jewelry? It\u2019s a necklace for her birthday tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl held up the small bag proudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cUncle Sam got me a star necklace!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

My face burned with shame.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought\u2026 you were cheating,\u201d I admitted quietly.<\/p>\n

Sam stepped closer and took my hand.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked up at me with hopeful eyes.<\/p>\n

My heart melted.<\/p>\n

I knelt down and hugged her.<\/p>\n
