I didnāt sleep that night.
The words from the unknown number kept replaying in my head.
āTheyāll pay for everything.ā
At first, I thought it was a prank. Maybe one of my friends trying to comfort me after the humiliation of being thrown out by my husband, Ethan, and his smug young mistress, Chloe.
But deep down, something felt⦠different.
Three days later, Ethan called.
For the first time in weeks, he sounded nervous.
āDid you tell my mother what happened?ā he snapped.
āNo,ā I answered coldly. āWhy?ā
He hesitated. āShe showed up here.ā
I nearly laughed. My mother-in-law, Vivian, hated drama and rarely visited anyone. If she had shown up unannounced, something serious was happening.
āWhat did she say?ā I asked.
Silence.
Then he muttered, āShe wants us out of the house.ā
My heart stopped.
āWhat?ā
āThat houseā¦ā he exhaled sharply, āwas never fully mine.ā
I remembered the day we bought it. Ethan had handled all the paperwork while I was recovering from surgery. I trusted him completely back then.
Vivian arrived at my apartment that evening.
Elegant as always, dressed in cream-colored silk, she looked around my tiny rented place and her eyes softened.
āYou shouldnāt be here,ā she said quietly.
I folded my arms. āYour son made that clear.ā
āNo,ā she replied firmly. āMy son made a mistake.ā
Then she placed a folder on my table.
Inside were copies of legal documents.
The house had been purchased through a family trust controlled by Vivian. She had added one condition years ago: if Ethan committed adultery during the marriage, ownership rights would be revoked immediately.
I stared at her in shock.
āYou knew heād cheat?ā
Her expression darkened. āI knew what kind of man I raised.ā
Apparently, one of the neighbors had recognized Chloe and sent photos to Vivian weeks before I was kicked out. The moment she confirmed the affair, she activated the clause.
āThat textā¦ā I whispered. āWas it from you?ā
Vivian gave a small smile. āI wanted you to know someone was on your side.ā
A week later, Ethan and Chloe were forced to move out.
But karma wasnāt finished.
Chloe discovered Ethan was drowning in debt. Ethan discovered Chloe had only stayed because she thought he owned the house.
Their relationship exploded publicly online within days.
Meanwhile, Vivian helped me hire a lawyer.
Not only did I receive my share of our savings, but Ethan was ordered to return every piece of jewelry and property he had withheldāincluding my motherās heirloom ring.
The day he handed it back, he couldnāt even look me in the eyes.
āI made a mistake,ā he whispered.
I slid the ring onto my finger and smiled calmly.
āNo,ā I said. āYou made a choice.ā
Then I walked away for good.
