I’m a 37-year-old woman, and my life has been turned upside down in the most horrific way imaginable. My husband and I have a 16-year-old daughter named Lily. Lily is a bright girl, but has always been a little impulsive. A few weeks ago, Lily accidentally ran her earbuds through the washing machine. They were completely ruined, and she was devastated. It wasn’t just any pair of earbuds; she had wanted the super expensive wireless kind and we were adamant she buy them herself. She worked part-time at the local grocery store, so we told her to save up her money and replace them herself. I even offered her my old wired ones, but she scoffed and said she only wanted the best, which honestly rubbed me the wrong way. A few days later, she went to her mother’s house for the weekend. When she returned, she was sporting the exact pair of wireless earbuds she had been coveting. My husband and I exchanged glances, wondering how she had saved up enough money so quickly. We decided not to press the issue, figuring she had learned her lesson about being more careful with her belongings. But then, things started to get weird. It wasn’t long before she started showing up with designer clothes, outfits that were way beyond anything we could afford for her. She’s always had a good sense of style, but this was on a different level. Then, she showed up with a full set of high-end makeup that must have cost hundreds of dollars. Where was this all coming from? We were incredibly confused.
The final straw was when Lily came home with a brand-new, incredibly expensive laptop. It was top-of-the-line, something even my husband, who works in IT, couldn’t justify buying for himself. At this point, my husband and I were both extremely concerned. We had noticed that Lily’s grades had started to slip, and her behavior at school had taken a turn for the worse. We decided it was time to get to the bottom of things. My husband called his ex-wife, Lily’s mother, and asked her if she had been buying Lily all these expensive gifts. His intention was to ask her to maybe ease up, as we felt it was negatively impacting Lily’s behavior and academic performance.
What his ex-wife said next sent a chill down my spine. She denied buying Lily any of the items. She said she had no idea where Lily was getting all these things, and she was just as concerned as we were. My husband and I were completely dumbfounded. If Lily’s mother wasn’t buying her these things, then where were they coming from? We decided we had to confront Lily and get the truth from her. We sat her down in the living room and asked her, calmly but firmly, to tell us where she had gotten all the expensive items. We explained to her that we weren’t mad, but we needed to know the truth.
At first, Lily was hesitant and evasive. She mumbled something about saving up her money and getting good deals. But we pressed her further, telling her we knew that wasn’t the truth. We told her that we were worried about her and that we just wanted to understand what was going on. After what felt like an eternity, Lily finally broke down and confessed. My husband and I were absolutely horrified. We couldn’t believe that our sweet, innocent Lily was capable of doing something like that. We were devastated, heartbroken, and filled with a rage I have never felt before.
We immediately ended her online access, got her into therapy, and are working to get justice on the men that did this to our little girl. We don’t know what the future holds, but we are committed to helping Lily heal and get her life back on track. We are also sharing our story in hopes that it will help other parents protect their children from the dangers that lurk online.
