Boyfriend’s Mom Threw Away My Food and Demanded I Change

I wanted to do something incredibly generous for my boyfriend Mark’s family. He constantly talked about how they were barely making ends meet, how they never got to experience anything fun, and how stressed his mom was. I knew a beach vacation would be the **PERFECT** escape for them. My mom works at a gorgeous all-inclusive resort, and I managed to snag a huge discount, making it affordable for me to treat them all. I was so excited to see their faces light up and to give them a week of relaxation and fun. I envisioned sunshine, laughter, and quality time spent together as a family – a far cry from their usual financial worries and daily grind. I planned activities, researched the best restaurants at the resort, and even packed little surprise gifts for everyone. I envisioned myself as some sort of hero, single handedly rescuing this family from the doldrums. Everything was set and I felt pretty good about myself. We all arrived, and the excitement was palpable.

The first night, we headed to the buffet for dinner. I was starving and loaded my plate with a mix of grilled steak, roasted vegetables, and a side of potatoes. I grabbed a drink and headed back to our table, eager to dig in. But when I got there, my plate was GONE. I looked around, confused, wondering if I had somehow misplaced it. I asked Mark if he had seen it, and he looked just as puzzled as I did. Then, his mom chimed in, completely nonchalantly. [“Oh, I asked the waiter to remove it,”] she said with a smile. I stood there in complete shock.

“I… I’m sorry?” I stammered, completely taken aback. “You asked the waiter to remove my plate? But… I was going to eat that.” Her smile faltered slightly. “Well, we don’t eat meat,” she explained, gesturing to herself and Mark’s sister, Sylvie. “And you won’t be eating meat while Sylvie is here either. It’s not something we do.” I was **STUNNED**. I eat meat. It’s a regular part of my diet. I wasn’t about to give it up for a week-long vacation.

“But… I eat meat,” I repeated, my voice rising in disbelief. “I planned on eating meat on this trip.” His mother’s smile vanished completely. “Not this week,” she stated firmly. “It’s disrespectful to eat meat in front of us, especially Sylvie. I just assumed you would adjust your diet accordingly. It’s the least you can do, considering we are your guests”. My mind was reeling. She [“ASSUMED I WOULD ADJUST MY DIET”]. The audacity of this woman was breathtaking. I had paid for this vacation! How dare she dictate what I could and couldn’t eat?

I was LIVID, but I bit my tongue, trying to avoid a scene. I knew Mark would hate it if I caused a fuss. “I don’t understand,” I said, trying to remain calm. “Why didn’t you just say something before I got my food? I could have easily chosen something else.” She shrugged. “I thought it was implied,” she said dismissively. “Honestly, I was just trying to do the right thing”. I looked to Mark for support, but he just shrugged awkwardly. He was clearly uncomfortable and didn’t want to get involved.

The very next day at lunch, I decided to have a turkey sandwich. I thought that would be safe enough but [“HIS MOM TOOK IT AWAY”]. She said she couldn’t believe I had so little respect for her values, that I just didn’t care. [“I told her this was the end of our relationship if she continued”].

Mark took his mother’s side, saying she only wanted to save my soul! I ended up having dinner alone at the Steak House and not speaking to them the rest of the trip.
