My heart started pounding so loudly I could hear it over the sound of my engine.
Sam pulled into the parking lot of a small house on the edge of town. It definitely wasnāt his parentsā place. I parked across the street, trying to stay hidden behind a large tree.
My hands were shaking.
This is it, I thought.Ā Iām about to catch him.
Sam stepped out of the car holding a small gift bagāthe kind jewelry stores use. My stomach twisted.
The front door opened before he even knocked.
But it wasnāt a woman who greeted him.
It was aĀ little girl.
She couldnāt have been more than six years old. She ran straight into his arms, laughing, and he picked her up like heād done it a thousand times before.
I froze.
Then an older womanāmaybe in her late 60sāstepped outside and smiled at him warmly.
Sam walked inside with them like he belonged there.
My chest felt tight. My mind was racing with a thousand terrible possibilities.
Was this his secret family?
I couldnāt sit there anymore. I got out of the car and walked up to the door before I could talk myself out of it.
I knocked.
A moment later, the door opened⦠and Samās face went completely pale.
āLisa? What are you doing here?ā he asked.
āI think I should be asking you that,ā I said, my voice shaking.
The little girl peeked out from behind him.
āSam, who is she?ā she asked softly.
Sam looked like he was about to collapse.
Then the older woman stepped forward.
āOh,ā she said gently. āYou must be his wife.ā
My heart dropped.
Sam rubbed his face and sighed.
āLisa⦠I was going to tell you. I just didnāt know how.ā
āTell me what?ā I whispered.
He looked at the little girl.
āThis is Emma,ā he said quietly. āSheās my niece.ā
I blinked.
āWhat?ā
āMy sister passed away three years ago,ā he continued. āShe had no one else. Mom and Dad are too old to take care of a young child full time⦠so Iāve been helping raise her.ā
I stared at him, completely stunned.
āThe clothes⦠the jewelry receiptā¦ā I said.
Sam gave a tired smile.
āThe clothes were because Emma kept saying I dressed like an old man,ā he said. āAnd the jewelry? Itās a necklace for her birthday tomorrow.ā
The little girl held up the small bag proudly.
āUncle Sam got me a star necklace!ā she said.
My face burned with shame.
āI thought⦠you were cheating,ā I admitted quietly.
Sam stepped closer and took my hand.
āI didnāt tell you because my sisterās death was still really hard for me,ā he said softly. āAnd I didnāt want to bring more sadness into our home.ā
The older woman smiled kindly.
āYou should come in,ā she said. āEmmaās been asking about meeting her aunt.ā
The little girl looked up at me with hopeful eyes.
āAre you really my aunt?ā she asked.
My heart melted.
I knelt down and hugged her.
āYes,ā I said softly. āI guess I am.ā
And in that moment, I realized the truth wasnāt betrayal at all.
It wasĀ a family I didnāt know I had.
