I didnât waste a second.
My hands trembled as I grabbed my keys and drove across town, my mind racing with a thousand possibilities. Cancel the wedding? After everything that had happened⌠after they shut me out?
When I arrived, Shelleyâs mother, Jen, was pacing outside like sheâd seen a ghost. The moment she saw me, she rushed over and pulled me inside.
âTell me whatâs going on,â I demanded.
She shut the door, lowered her voice, and said, âThat DNA test⌠it was real. But something isnât right.â
My heart skipped. âWhat do you mean?â
Jen swallowed hard. âShelley never wanted you to ask for that test. Not because she was afraid of the result⌠but because she had already taken one before.â
I felt the ground shift beneath me. âAnother test?â
Jen nodded. âBefore she told Ryan she was pregnant, she had doubts. She tested with someone else first.â
The room went silent.
âAnd?â I whispered.
Jenâs eyes filled with tears. âIt came back negative. That man wasnât the father. She panicked⌠and then she met Ryan.â
I staggered back. âYouâre saying she⌠chose him?â
âShe thought if she moved fast enough, no one would question the timeline,â Jen said. âWhen your test came back positive, she was shockedâbut she used it to lock everything in.â
My mind spun. âBut⌠if Ryan is the fatherââ
Jen interrupted, voice shaking. âThatâs the problem. I donât think that test was clean.â
A chill ran down my spine.
âI found messages,â she continued. âShelley contacted a lab technicianâsomeone she knows. I think the results were altered.â
I couldnât believe what I was hearing. âYouâre saying my son might not even be the father?â
Jen nodded slowly. âAnd heâs about to marry her based on a lie.â
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I took a deep breath. âWe need proof.â
âI know,â she said. âThatâs why I called you.â
That night, we sat together, going through every message, every detail. By morning, we had enough to raise serious doubtsâbut not enough to convince Ryan.
So we made a plan.
Two days later, I showed up at Ryanâs apartmentâthe first time heâd seen me in weeks. His expression was cold.
âMom, what are you doing here?â
âIâm asking for one thing,â I said calmly. âTake another DNA test. At a different lab. One Shelley canât touch.â
He laughed bitterly. âYouâve already done enough.â
âPlease,â I said softly. âIf Iâm wrong, Iâll walk away forever. But if Iâm right⌠this will save your life.â
He hesitated.
Something in my voice must have reached himâbecause after a long silence, he sighed. âFine. One more test.â
The longest week of my life followed.
When the results came in, Ryan called me.
His voice was broken.
âMom⌠you were right.â
My chest tightened. âRyanâŚâ
âIâm not the father.â
The wedding was canceled that same day.
Shelley disappeared from our lives almost overnight. No explanations, no apologiesâjust silence.
And as painful as it all was, Ryan came back to me.
One evening, sitting across from me with tired eyes, he said quietly, âYou were the only one who tried to protect me⌠and I pushed you away.â
I reached for his hand. âThatâs what mothers do.â
Sometimes, the truth hurts more than lies.
But that truth saved my sonâs futureâand that was all that mattered.
