Zacharyâs voice was low, controlledâbut there was something sharp beneath it. Something final.
My mom shook her head, her hands trembling as they clutched at his sleeve. âYou canât tell her. It will destroy her⊠please.â
I felt my heart slam against my ribs. Tell me what?
Zachary pulled his arm away slowly, like he was afraid of what he might do if he moved too fast. âShe deserves the truth,â he said. âI wonât start a marriage with lies.â
My breath caught. Marriage. Lies. My legs felt weak, but I couldnât moveâI couldnât reveal myself just yet.
My momâs voice broke. âI was young. I was stupid. It meant nothing.â
Zachary let out a bitter laugh. âNothing? I took a DNA test, Linda.â
Everything inside me went silent.
âA what?â my mom whispered.
âI found out three months ago,â he continued, his voice shaking now. âI didnât want to believe it. I thought there had to be a mistake. But there wasnât.â
I pressed my hand to my mouth, dread crawling up my spine.
âWhat are you saying?â my mom asked, though it sounded like she already knew.
Zachary swallowed hard. âIâm saying⊠Iâm your son.â
The world tilted.
I must have made a sound, because both of them turned. Their eyes landed on meâmy momâs wide with horror, Zacharyâs filled with something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
âNoâŠâ I whispered, stepping back. âNo, thatâs not possible. Thatâsâthis is some kind of joke.â
âItâs not,â Zachary said softly. âI wish it was.â
My mom burst into tears, collapsing onto the floor. âI never knew,â she sobbed. âI swear, I never knew it was himâŠâ
I felt like I couldnât breathe. The man I lovedâthe man I was supposed to marry in less than 24 hoursâwas standing in front of me as a stranger.
Or worse.
Family.
âYou knew?â I asked Zachary, my voice shaking. âYou knew and you still⊠you still proposed?â
âI didnât know at first,â he said quickly. âWhen we met, when we fell in loveâI had no idea. It was only after I met your mom⊠something felt off. I dug deeper. And when I found outâŠâ He ran a hand through his hair, his composure cracking. âI didnât know how to tell you.â
Tears blurred my vision. âSo what, you were just going to marry me anyway?â
âNo!â he snapped. âI came here tonight to end it. To tell her I wouldnât go through with the wedding.â
I looked between them, my chest tightening with every second.
âSo this is it?â I whispered. âEverything⊠was a lie?â
Zachary shook his head, stepping closerâbut I stepped back.
âNo. What I feel for you is real,â he said. âThatâs what makes this so unbearable.â
I let out a hollow laugh. âUnbearable? Zachary, weâre siblings.â
The word hung in the air like a death sentence.
No one spoke.
Finally, I wiped my tears and straightened, even though my whole body felt like it was falling apart.
âThe wedding is off,â I said quietly. âYou should both leave.â
My mom reached for me. âHoney, pleaseââ
âDonât,â I said, backing away again. âJust⊠donât.â
Zachary hesitated, his eyes searching mine for somethingâanythingâbut I had nothing left to give.
Without another word, he turned and walked out the door.
A moment later, my mom followed, her sobs echoing through the house.
And just like that, the life I thought I had⊠was gone before it ever began.
