Zacharyās voice was low, controlledābut there was something sharp beneath it. Something final.
My mom shook her head, her hands trembling as they clutched at his sleeve. āYou canāt tell her. It will destroy her⦠please.ā
I felt my heart slam against my ribs.Ā Tell me what?
Zachary pulled his arm away slowly, like he was afraid of what he might do if he moved too fast. āShe deserves the truth,ā he said. āI wonāt start a marriage with lies.ā
My breath caught. Marriage. Lies. My legs felt weak, but I couldnāt moveāI couldnāt reveal myself just yet.
My momās voice broke. āI was young. I was stupid. It meant nothing.ā
Zachary let out a bitter laugh. āNothing? I took a DNA test, Linda.ā
Everything inside me went silent.
āA what?ā my mom whispered.
āI found out three months ago,ā he continued, his voice shaking now. āI didnāt want to believe it. I thought there had to be a mistake. But there wasnāt.ā
I pressed my hand to my mouth, dread crawling up my spine.
āWhat are you saying?ā my mom asked, though it sounded like she already knew.
Zachary swallowed hard. āIām saying⦠Iām your son.ā
The world tilted.
I must have made a sound, because both of them turned. Their eyes landed on meāmy momās wide with horror, Zacharyās filled with something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
āNoā¦ā I whispered, stepping back. āNo, thatās not possible. Thatāsāthis is some kind of joke.ā
āItās not,ā Zachary said softly. āI wish it was.ā
My mom burst into tears, collapsing onto the floor. āI never knew,ā she sobbed. āI swear, I never knew it was himā¦ā
I felt like I couldnāt breathe. The man I lovedāthe man I was supposed to marry in less than 24 hoursāwas standing in front of me as a stranger.
Or worse.
Family.
āYou knew?ā I asked Zachary, my voice shaking. āYou knew and you still⦠you still proposed?ā
āI didnāt know at first,ā he said quickly. āWhen we met, when we fell in loveāI had no idea. It was only after I met your mom⦠something felt off. I dug deeper. And when I found outā¦ā He ran a hand through his hair, his composure cracking. āI didnāt know how to tell you.ā
Tears blurred my vision. āSo what, you were just going to marry me anyway?ā
āNo!ā he snapped. āI came here tonight to end it. To tell her I wouldnāt go through with the wedding.ā
I looked between them, my chest tightening with every second.
āSo this is it?ā I whispered. āEverything⦠was a lie?ā
Zachary shook his head, stepping closerābut I stepped back.
āNo. What I feel for you is real,ā he said. āThatās what makes this so unbearable.ā
I let out a hollow laugh. āUnbearable? Zachary, weāre siblings.ā
The word hung in the air like a death sentence.
No one spoke.
Finally, I wiped my tears and straightened, even though my whole body felt like it was falling apart.
āThe wedding is off,ā I said quietly. āYou should both leave.ā
My mom reached for me. āHoney, pleaseāā
āDonāt,ā I said, backing away again. āJust⦠donāt.ā
Zachary hesitated, his eyes searching mine for somethingāanythingābut I had nothing left to give.
Without another word, he turned and walked out the door.
A moment later, my mom followed, her sobs echoing through the house.
And just like that, the life I thought I had⦠was gone before it ever began.
