A splitting headache was the least of my problems. My heart is shattered. šŸ’”ā€šŸ©¹

Zachary’s voice was low, controlled—but there was something sharp beneath it. Something final.

My mom shook her head, her hands trembling as they clutched at his sleeve. ā€œYou can’t tell her. It will destroy her… please.ā€

I felt my heart slam against my ribs.Ā Tell me what?

Zachary pulled his arm away slowly, like he was afraid of what he might do if he moved too fast. ā€œShe deserves the truth,ā€ he said. ā€œI won’t start a marriage with lies.ā€

My breath caught. Marriage. Lies. My legs felt weak, but I couldn’t move—I couldn’t reveal myself just yet.

My mom’s voice broke. ā€œI was young. I was stupid. It meant nothing.ā€

Zachary let out a bitter laugh. ā€œNothing? I took a DNA test, Linda.ā€

Everything inside me went silent.

ā€œA what?ā€ my mom whispered.

ā€œI found out three months ago,ā€ he continued, his voice shaking now. ā€œI didn’t want to believe it. I thought there had to be a mistake. But there wasn’t.ā€

I pressed my hand to my mouth, dread crawling up my spine.

ā€œWhat are you saying?ā€ my mom asked, though it sounded like she already knew.

Zachary swallowed hard. ā€œI’m saying… I’m your son.ā€

The world tilted.

I must have made a sound, because both of them turned. Their eyes landed on me—my mom’s wide with horror, Zachary’s filled with something I had never seen before.

Guilt.

ā€œNoā€¦ā€ I whispered, stepping back. ā€œNo, that’s not possible. That’s—this is some kind of joke.ā€

ā€œIt’s not,ā€ Zachary said softly. ā€œI wish it was.ā€

My mom burst into tears, collapsing onto the floor. ā€œI never knew,ā€ she sobbed. ā€œI swear, I never knew it was himā€¦ā€

I felt like I couldn’t breathe. The man I loved—the man I was supposed to marry in less than 24 hours—was standing in front of me as a stranger.

Or worse.

Family.

ā€œYou knew?ā€ I asked Zachary, my voice shaking. ā€œYou knew and you still… you still proposed?ā€

ā€œI didn’t know at first,ā€ he said quickly. ā€œWhen we met, when we fell in love—I had no idea. It was only after I met your mom… something felt off. I dug deeper. And when I found outā€¦ā€ He ran a hand through his hair, his composure cracking. ā€œI didn’t know how to tell you.ā€

Tears blurred my vision. ā€œSo what, you were just going to marry me anyway?ā€

ā€œNo!ā€ he snapped. ā€œI came here tonight to end it. To tell her I wouldn’t go through with the wedding.ā€

I looked between them, my chest tightening with every second.

ā€œSo this is it?ā€ I whispered. ā€œEverything… was a lie?ā€

Zachary shook his head, stepping closer—but I stepped back.

ā€œNo. What I feel for you is real,ā€ he said. ā€œThat’s what makes this so unbearable.ā€

I let out a hollow laugh. ā€œUnbearable? Zachary, we’re siblings.ā€

The word hung in the air like a death sentence.

No one spoke.

Finally, I wiped my tears and straightened, even though my whole body felt like it was falling apart.

ā€œThe wedding is off,ā€ I said quietly. ā€œYou should both leave.ā€

My mom reached for me. ā€œHoney, pleaseā€”ā€

ā€œDon’t,ā€ I said, backing away again. ā€œJust… don’t.ā€

Zachary hesitated, his eyes searching mine for something—anything—but I had nothing left to give.

Without another word, he turned and walked out the door.

A moment later, my mom followed, her sobs echoing through the house.

And just like that, the life I thought I had… was gone before it ever began.
