My wife, Linda, and I received an invitation to my old friend David’s wedding. We were thrilled for him and his fiancée, Emily, as they were a wonderful couple. However, as we examined the RSVP card more closely, we noticed something incredibly bizarre scribbled at the bottom. In what appeared to be rushed handwriting, someone had written: “LADIES – PLEASE WEAR WHITE, WEDDING DRESSES WELCOME!” Linda and I exchanged puzzled glances, completely taken aback by this strange request. Was this some kind of unusual theme? A joke gone wrong? We honestly had no idea, so I immediately decided to call David to seek clarification. David answered the phone with a weary sigh, and as soon as I mentioned the strange dress code instruction, he groaned. “It’s Emily’s mom, Dorothy,” he explained with a heavy voice. “She’s planning to wear her own wedding dress to the wedding in an attempt to upstage Emily.” I was absolutely floored. How could a mother do such a thing to her own daughter? David went on to describe a series of increasingly outrageous behaviors Dorothy had exhibited throughout the wedding planning process. She had allegedly [ “HIJACKED EMILY’S BRIDAL SHOWER” ], turning it into a showcase for herself and her accomplishments. She had also relentlessly mocked Emily’s choice of venue, calling it ‘too rustic’ and ‘not elegant enough’ for such an important occasion. And, to top it all off, she had even brazenly threatened to walk Emily down the aisle herself, pushing David’s father aside in the process!

Linda and I were absolutely appalled by Dorothy’s behavior. It was clear that she was determined to make Emily’s wedding day all about herself. We couldn’t stand by and watch Emily’s special day be ruined by her narcissistic mother. We knew we had to do something to help. After a long conversation with David and a few secret calls with other guests, we came up with a plan. It was a bit risky, but we were determined to protect Emily from Dorothy’s selfish antics. We all agreed to coordinate our efforts and ensure that Dorothy’s attempt to upstage the bride would backfire spectacularly. The wedding was fast approaching, and we were ready to put our plan into action. The only thing left to do was wait.
On the day of the wedding, Linda and I arrived at the venue, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. As we entered the reception hall, we were greeted by a surprising sight. To our delight, we saw a room full of women, all dressed in various shades of white! Some wore elegant cocktail dresses, while others sported chic pantsuits. Everyone was in on our plan, and the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation. We knew Dorothy was due to arrive any minute, and we were all eager to see her reaction to our unexpected sartorial choices.
Moments later, Dorothy made her grand entrance. She strutted into the room, beaming with pride and radiating self-importance. She was wearing a pristine white wedding dress, complete with a sparkling tiara, shimmering rhinestones, and a cathedral-length train that trailed behind her. She clearly believed she was the star of the show, completely oblivious to the fact that she was about to be outsmarted. Her smile faltered slightly as she scanned the room, taking in the sea of white dresses. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she realized that she wasn’t the only woman in white.
For a moment, Dorothy was speechless. Her meticulously planned attempt to upstage Emily had been completely foiled. She sputtered and stammered, trying to regain her composure, but it was clear that she was flustered and embarrassed. As Emily made her entrance, looking absolutely radiant in her own wedding dress, Dorothy’s face contorted with a mixture of jealousy and frustration. The rest of the wedding proceeded without a hitch. Emily and David exchanged their vows, surrounded by their loved ones, and Dorothy was forced to watch from the sidelines, her grand plan in ruins.
Later that evening, as Linda and I were leaving the reception, Emily approached us with tears in her eyes. She thanked us profusely for our help in saving her wedding day from her mother’s selfish antics. It felt good to know that we had played a part in ensuring that Emily and David’s special day was filled with love, joy, and laughter, rather than overshadowed by Dorothy’s attention-seeking behavior. We learned that day that sometimes, the best way to deal with a difficult situation is to unite and turn the tables on those who seek to ruin it. [ “AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE DID!” ]
