The phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor.
“What do you mean?” I whispered, my voice shaking as I picked it back up. “Dad… what are you saying?”
There was a pause on the other end. I could hear him breathing, uneven, like he had run a long distance.
“I found out… your husband has a son,” he finally said.
My heart stopped.
“What?” My legs gave out and I sank onto the pavement outside the school gates. Parents passed by, laughing, chatting, holding their children’s hands—while my world cracked open.
“A child,” Dad repeated. “He’s been hiding it. For years.”
My mind spiraled. An affair was one thing—but a whole child? A life? A secret that big?
“Where is my son?” I asked, panic rising like fire in my chest.
Another pause.
“He’s… safe,” Dad said.
Something in his voice changed. Too careful. Too controlled.
“Dad,” I said slowly, dread creeping in. “Where is he?”
“I picked him up.”
The words didn’t make sense at first.
“You… what?”
“I went to the school before you got there,” he continued. “I thought… I thought you needed time. After everything. I didn’t want him caught in the middle.”
My grip tightened around the phone. “You took my child without telling me?”
“I’m your father,” he snapped, but there was fear underneath. “I’m trying to protect you.”
“By kidnapping my son?” My voice broke. Heads turned. I didn’t care.
“He’s not kidnapped. He’s with me. And you need to come here. There’s more you need to know.”
Every instinct screamed at me to run—to get in the car and drive as fast as I could. But something held me back.
“More?” I whispered. “What else could there possibly be?”
Another long silence.
Then, quietly:
“The child your husband has… the other one…”
My breath caught.
“He’s in my house too.”
The world tilted.
“Why?” I asked, barely audible.
“Because,” Dad said, his voice heavy with something I’d never heard before—shame. “That child… is your brother.”
Everything went silent.
The cars. The voices. The world.
“No,” I said, shaking my head even though he couldn’t see me. “No, that’s not possible.”
“I made a mistake a long time ago,” he said. “And now it’s all come back.”
My chest tightened as the truth twisted into something unbearable.
My husband didn’t just betray me.
He married into my family’s secret.
And now, somehow, our lives—mine, my son’s, that child’s—were tangled in a web of lies that started long before I ever said “I do.”
“I’m coming,” I said, standing on unsteady legs.
This time… I wasn’t staying.
